What is ATS and where is it deployed?

According to the UP Police website, the Uttar Pradesh government had established the Anti-Terror Squad in 2007 to deal with terrorist activities in the state. UP’s Anti-Terror Squad has been operational since 2007 and works as a special unit of the UP Police. The headquarters of ATS is located in the capital Lucknow. Field units have also been formed in different districts of the state, where there are many teams of operational ATS commandos.

Other special units are working at ATS Headquarters to provide accurate and necessary support to the operation teams and field units. ATS is usually deployed in those places where there are rumors of terrorist activities. Apart from this, ATS commandos are deployed for the security of VVIP people wherever they gather. ATS commandos have also been deployed several times to take action against the mafia in UP.

How is the training of ATS commandos?

According to the report of Dainik Bhaskar, three exams are also given to the soldiers, which include physical capacity, mental ability and technical and general knowledge test. The soldiers who pass the preliminary examinations are sent for ATS training. UP ATS commandos are prepared at different training centers in the state. On most occasions, there are changes in commando training centres. Commandos are also given training under rotation.

At the same time, according to the CAG report, the training of UP ATS commandos has been divided into four parts. In this, there is a pre-induction course for the first four weeks, where all the necessary information is given. Then there is army attachment for the next four weeks. After this there is a basic induction course of 14 weeks and finally an advanced course of eight weeks. To become ATS commando, applications are invited by the government from police and PAC personnel.

During training, soldiers are taught things like using modern weapons, jumping on rough ground, target shooting, martial arts. The stress level of soldiers is also checked during training. Fighting without weapons and how to deal with an enemy when attacked with a knife are also taught in the training. The training of UP ATS commandos is somewhat like that of NSG commandos.
